Chapter 541: Verdurous Giant Spear (3)

The Guardians of the Rifts dropped guardian essences along with rift stones and numbered items. On top of that, we could gain experience as a bonus for defeating the guardian, so this monster was juicier than other monsters to fight, to say.

The problem was that it was much more difficult to defeat.

But the difficulty of most Guardians stems from the effect of the field they fight in…

This could be seen even on the first-floor rift, Glacier Cave.

We had to fight while being affected by the Hypothermia field effect, and we had a similar experience in the White Temple in the third-floor rift. The difficulty of the battles skyrocketed since we had to fight while being affected by debuffs during the process.

However, we weren’t in the City of Light right now.

A Milayel without the Heavenly Magic Circle or any of the guardian angels?

It was the best advantage we’d had yet, so I was honestly a little disappointed when I was running away from it before. And yet, it had followed me all the way here.

“Behel—LAAAAAA!” I charged with my shield in front of me as a welcoming gift.

Boom!

It tried to stab with its spear to stop me, but there was no way it would work. After being flung back by my slam, the weapon flipped in the air before landing back in the water.

Alright, we should have our battle formations now.

Splish.

I didn’t chase after it with my hammer and instead lowered my shield a little. If I combined Demon Grinder with Swing, the damage dealt could be significant, but I wasn’t the main damage dealer here.

[Myul Armin has cast Supersensitive Skin.]

[Myul Armin has cast Weaken Soul.]

[Myul Armin has cast Self-Destructing Spirit of Vengeance.]

As Myul Armin laid out his array of curses, the ranged dealers began their volley.

[Jackson Janvil has cast Moving Target.]

[Sharlot Emblut has cast the rank 4 attack magic Spiral Needle.]

[Nua Merbochi has cast Precise Shot.]

[Garton Cultner has cast Stone Cannon.]

Wizards, priests, special ability users, archers—all kinds of classes launched myriad colors of attacks.

Since Milayel had quite the durability, it continued to strike forward with its spear while being bombarded by the attacks, but I kept slamming it backward out into the open area so the ranged attackers would have an easier time hitting it.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Blessing of Light.]

A minute later, light began to pour from its bullied body. It signaled the end of phase one and that it would start using things other than just Return.

This is so much easier without the guardian angels.

Of course, there were a few more things I needed to keep in mind while fighting its second phase. The Blessing of Light would recover a large percentage of its health, lower its cooldowns, and increase its base resistances and stats. But more importantly than that, this guy would start using that combo during phase two.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Return.]

Now it was showing off its cheat skill.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Splintering Comet. All projectiles are multiplied.]

The singular spear that was shot into the air suddenly splintered into dozens more as they fell like rain, converting the sure-hit and damage-amplified throw attack into what was essentially an AOE skill.

However, thanks to me pulling its aggro pretty well, the skill changed in a significant way.

Fwoong!

As if they were guided missiles, the dozens of spears all honed in on me. There was no need whatsoever for me to be nervous, of course.

Clang, cling, clang!

Just by covering my head with the shield, the spears ricocheted off like bullets.

[Defense successful. Wall of Aegis absorbed all damage.]

This was the reason Union and Giantization were important.

When the shield increased in size, the area it guarded also increased. This shield’s sole weakness was that it couldn’t block attacks that were bigger than the shield or were attacking a wide area.

Anyway, I guess that first technique was blocked well…

After that, just like in phase one, its attack patterns repeated.

It picked up the spear stuck in the ground to charge me, and I pushed it back.

Clang, clang, clang!

When there was distance between us, the ranged dealers rained down on it with their attacks.

Normally when fighting Milayel, all sorts of monsters and guardian angels got in the way so a concentrated attack like this was impossible. But right now, we were simply in a normal field.

Sparkle!

As we attacked it with our combined might, the dozens of spears scattered around the beach disappeared.

This was the reason Splintering Comet was such a troublesome skill. Since it involved duplication, there were way too many ways to cheat with it.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has retrieved the Verdurous Giant Spear. Until the end of combat, the strength of Return slightly increases.]

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has retrieved the Verdurous Giant Spear. Until the end of combat, the strength of Return slightly increases.]

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has retrieved the Verdurous Giant Spear. Until the end of combat…]

The buffs were applied multiple times with just a single use of the skill.

Soon, Milayel threw the spear into the air one more time. It would be twice as strong as the one previously thrown by it. However, I didn’t really care at this point.

So what if it was stronger?

[Defense successful. Wall of Aegis absorbed all damage.]

In front of the strongest shield, it didn’t matter if a skill like that continued to become stronger.

Yeah… Over-gearing is the best.

I was withstanding the attack pattern that should’ve been cycled through and distributed between multiple tanks. Honestly, it was as if I were holding back the main skill of phase two all by myself.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Splintering Comet. All projectiles are multiplied.]

Around the time it used the combo the third time, we were able to enter phase three.

It took us four minutes to get here…

Maybe we could get this done within six.

Milayel’s pattern in phase three was simple.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Descend.]

It used the so-called berserk-pattern.

Fwoosh!

As it emitted light while curled up, wings of light sprouted from its back. They looked similar to the Wings of Greed that Ainar had, but it was fundamentally different, and not just because of the small fact that this pair of wings was much more fancy-looking.

Fwoom!

These wings allowed flight.

“Whoa! It’s wings!”

While Ainair looked up in awe, Milayel continued to climb higher. However, maybe it was because this wasn’t its original field, but an island.

It doesn’t even look that good.

Usually, the outer walls would break down at this point and an army of light spirits would run in from the sides—

[The light spirits gather, sensing the divine energies.]

Huh, what?

That was still the same even though we were in a different field. This didn’t happen when an ordinary Titanus used Descend, so I thought it was a field effect.

I guess the Guardians of the Rifts have something special added to them?

I couldn’t be sure, but having the melee damage dealers stationed at the back turned out to be a good idea. Though I wouldn’t exactly say I had expected this. It was more that I had put them at the back because we needed to focus more on concentrated damage.

“Stand in formation!”

“You just need to endure, so don’t overextend!”

In any case, Versyl seemed to be commanding those troops pretty well, so I didn’t need to worry.

I raised my head to look at the guy flying into the sky.

“…The day of judgment has come.”

I didn’t feel it had the right to say that after being pushed to this point in just four minutes, but it wasn’t as if it could do anything else. It only repeated the lines that were given to it.

But what were these guys?

A thought crept up on me.

What exactly was this world?

Even though the people in the city all acted like they had their own lives and moved with consciousness, why were the monsters in the labyrinth all still acting like the Al was controlling them in the game

Ah, so annoying.

Milayel threw another spear down at me, interrupting my thoughts.

I shook myself, regaining my focus. “Erwen, how much longer?” I shouted, concluding it was about time. There was a reason I had kept her ready until the end. “Get ready!”

“Got it!”

As soon as we entered phase three, we prepared Erwen’s lethal combo. After the monster began floating into the sky, its evasion increased by quite a lot.

[Erwen Fornacci di Tersia has summoned the Elemental Ruler of Darkness. Dicloe.]

Just beating it up without giving it space to dodge was the best method.

Bang, bang, bang!

The orbs of darkness that flooded the sky exploded like fireworks in a destructive but beautiful scene.

Even while commanding this scenery, Erwen also pulled her bow to cast Concentrated Fire.

And so the countdown began.

[The accumulated energies have been exhausted. An unknown energy is revealed after all resources have been exhausted.]

Around the time I expected Chaos Circuit to activate, from the monster’s cracked and beaten skin, a pale-white inner skin revealed itself.

[Spearman of the Heavens, Milayel, has cast Cracking Shell.]

Hmm, though calling it skin was weird in a way. Its body was glowing brightly just like how someone would look if they stared right at a light bulb.

Shine

The sparkling light covered its body and while holding the huge spear with one of its hands, it slowly descended with flaps of its wings. Looking up at something like that, it truly looked like I was looking at something divine.

Well, it was going to die here anyway.

“Mortals.”

I didn’t know if it knew or not as it spoke while looking at me.

“Your greed has sowed the seeds of destruction.”

But had I ever heard it say something like that before?

“Your arrogance has brought about the end of this world.”

I thought it just said “I will judge you—”

“I will judge you.”

Yeah, it usually just ended with that one phrase.

…Well, this isn’t the only thing that’s different from the game.

I didn’t really think too deeply about what Milayel said. What required my attention now was its transformation-specifically, the transformation in the red great spear it was holding.

[The Final Spearman, Milayel, summons the true form of the Verdurous Giant Spear.]

Just like how the monster changed its outer shell when entering the final phase, the hidden form under the spear also revealed itself, now a giant spear bathed in a blinding, green light.

Bzzt, bzzzt!

As sparks jumped about on the spear, it excluded power that seemed impossible to be contested with any other weapon.

Honestly, it wasn’t too far from the truth. While using the spear, thrust damage was increased by 1,200%. Natural Regeneration was increased relative to the time in battle. It came with the highest-rank indestructibility with divine-damage immunity.

When using the spear’s skill, you could recover 50 percent of the spent resources over a minute and when attacked with a mental-type skill, it was negated and reflected in full. When the active option was applied, three more traits were added on top of that.

All damage dealt by the spear was tripled.

All healing-type effects were tripled.

And finally…

A highest-rank piercer trait.

The spear that could pierce through all things. If something like that were to exist in this world, the Verdurous Giant Spear would be the contender for that title.

However, there was a problem.

Bzzt! Creak!

The all-piercing spear and the all-blocking shield-what would happen if both of these collided with each other?

“…Disappear!”

In truth, I already knew the answer.

[Defense successful. Wall of Aegis absorbed all damage.]

The shield would win.

With that, I asked Milayel whose attack had been nullified, “Do you know what the most creative weapon in the world is?”

As expected, it didn’t reply to my question, but that was no big deal. So what? I just continued to talk.

“The answer…is the shield.”

Unfortunately, I couldn’t explain why that was.

“Ah, oops.”

Because the casting had finished.

It wasn’t a sound, per se.

Flash!

As the feeling of something passing by my ear whished by, the island was instantly dyed with a bright light.

Alright, let’s see the time…

Six minutes, seventeen seconds.

Damn it, couldn’t get in sub-six minutes.

[You have defeated the Spearman of Heaven, Milayel. EXP +8]

[Elite Guardian kill bonus. EXP +5]

Flash!

It was the light that signaled the defeat of a monster.

Dozens of adventurers looked at that bundle of light with anticipation in their bodies. I had told everyone beforehand that this was not an ordinary monster but, instead, a guardian monster that could be seen in the rift on the eighth floor.

Let’s see.

What did it drop?

As everyone looked at it with a singular heart, we all saw it.

Tap.

First, one of the drops of the guardian, the rift stone, didn’t appear.

“Tsk…”

Neither did the rainbow essence.

Ignoring everything else, Splintering Comet would’ve been great for Erwen so I was waiting for it to appear. Even though I had Beginner’s Luck on my side, it didn’t appear. It was a shame, but it wasn’t as if it didn’t drop any loot at all.

To be honest, I found the actual result hard to believe.

“Uh, that’s—!”

After turning into light, the Spearman of Heaven, Milayel, dropped a numbered item.

The probability of a guardian dropping a numbered item is 33%.

On top of that, an item that would have a 3% chance of dropping after a numbered item appeared had ended up dropping.

“It’s the spear that guy was holding…!”

No. 7, Milayel’s Verdurous Giant Spear.

As soon as I saw it, rather than joy, I felt baffled. To put a more precise term on it, I would say it was more uneasiness. Because, you know. I had just gotten Wall of Aegis, but now we had another single-digit numbered item.

…Why am I getting so lucky?

I hadn’t expected much, but as it became reality, I felt an unknown sense of fear. It was the gut feeling of a child who knew they were unlucky.

However, people lived with their brains. Even as my heart pounded with worry, my head began to think with joy.

The Verdurous Giant Spear…

Our current party didn’t have anyone who used a spear.

However, the joy of Dungeon and Stone was to use the items that we received to the best of our abilities.

“Hmm…”

So who should I give this to so the news could spread the best?
