Chapter 694: Wolf (3)

Someone would be hard-pressed to describe the motion of Baekho’s hand taking off that mask as anything close to “kind” or “gentle.” His hand was stretched open as he grasped the wolf mask, before he ripped it away from the man’s face, ignoring all sorts of bindings clutching it together.

Then, the face behind the wolf mask was revealed to us.

Baekho remained silent for a moment as if to collect his thoughts before breaking that silence.

“Wow, you really were alive?”

Although it was the joking tone he usually used, his eyes were glacial as he looked at the target.

Well, it was understandable. For Baekho, “betrayal” was his trigger button.

“Leyton Bryat.”

And this guy was actually the second oldest team member of Baekho, right after Fallen Gramps.

“You bastard. Didn’t I at least treat you well?” Baekho mumbled. Then, he let out a deep sigh. “Well, that’s that… But tell me this. How are you, who I was told was dead, alive? And what’s with this wolf mask? And what were you scheming behind my back?”

Bryat didn’t answer.

“Also, every time you stop talking, I’m going to take one thing from your body, so keep that in mind.”

No reply.

“Talk,” Baekho pressed, commanding him to speak.

It may have been obvious, but there was no way the guy who had remained silent this entire time would speak just because of a little threat. Instead, Bryat looked up at Baekho with deep hostility.

Baekho remained stoic, but once the silence had lapsed for three more seconds, he leisurely reached out with his hand.

“Ack! Argh, ack—!”

He then pushed his fingers deep into Bryat’s left eye before gouging it out.

Tick, tip, tack…

He moved very slowly. Slow enough that we could hear many distinct snaps from his target’s head.

“Ack! Ahhh!”

Even as Bryat writhed on the ground in pain, Baekho showed no change in emotion and only said one thing.

“Talk.”

He didn’t do anything else other than say that. He didn’t add on any threats, any appeasements, or use any interrogation techniques. He just asked for him to talk, and after waiting for a few seconds, if the silence persisted, he repeated his actions.

“Aaaack—!”

He gouged out the eyes, ripped off the ears, and pulled out the organs.

And if Bryat fell into a critical condition during that process, Baekho would pour a potion on him to heal him.

Sizzle!

Baekho was pretty intense for continuing with this process without showing any change in emotion, but Bryat was no joke either. From what I could tell, it wasn’t like he couldn’t feel the pain either.

But he hasn’t said anything other than the screams.

Maybe he realized that it didn’t matter in the end?

He didn’t try making excuses for himself nor did he ask Baekho to kill him. His mental strength was admirable, but at this rate, this interrogation wouldn’t bear any fruit.

I think it’s about time for him to change his methods…

I thought about stopping Baekho, but I let go of that thought after seeing his face.

It wouldn’t be too late for us to look for a different method after he calmed down a little. And it wasn’t like I was the one hurting.

“Aaack!”

And so, as I continued to watch Bryat get “healed” by him, the others caught up to us.

“Ah, you’re here. Why are you so late?”

“We got lost. None of us was able to find the path.”

“So what’s going on here?”

“Wait! Bryat? Isn’t that Bryat over there?”

“Calm down. I’ll explain.”

Baekho showed no interest in the people who came, so I gave a quick explanation of the situation in his stead.

“So… there was a suspicious person here wearing a wolf mask, and Baekho caught him, took off his mask, and it was Bryat underneath it…”

“Sir Ruingenes! How can this be? Didn’t you say you saw Bryat dead with your own eyes!”

“I was sure when I saw him. However, seeing how he is alive and well…it seems he can fake his death, or use an item to the same effect.”

“That’s probably the case. He acted dead after getting caught not long ago.”

“Hmm… There are a few abilities I can think of.”

Well, it wasn’t important if he had an ability or an item. The main point was that Bryat acted dead in front of Fallen Gramps and had secretly hidden himself inside the ruins.

“This is even more suspicious. Just what is Mr. Bryat doing all this for?”

“We’ll have to hear that from him now.”

Baekho shouted in our direction, “Gramps! What are you doing? If you’re here, put that on him already! That thing!”

Fallen Gramps approached Bryat and cast a spell on him.

“Do you know what that is?”

GM gave a swift response to my question. “From the way the mana is being dispersed, I suspect it is a neural type acceleration and awakening—”

“To put it simply, you’re saying it’ll help with the interrogation?”

“Yes… In that state, his pain will be multiplied and he’ll be able to feel it more clearly.”

I should ask my wizard to do something like this next time I need to interrogate someone.

I unexpectedly obtained some good information. In any case, the effect of the spell was immediate. The screams became multiple times louder, and he was even starting to shed tears and snot. His voice gave out not long after, giving way to a shrill cry.

However, when Bryat said nothing until the very end and wound up falling unconscious, Baekho couldn’t help but comment as well.

“Wow, he was one intense bastard.”

To be honest, I thought Baekho was the more intense one, given that he was still pouring that healing potion while saying it.

Sizzle!

He seemed to have vented his anger somewhat as Baekho stopped his torture and returned to us. Seeing how his usual gentle smile had returned, I got the feeling he was ready to talk.

“What happened?”

“Huh? How am I supposed to take that question?”

“It’s a bit suspicious. How did you find the guy that we weren’t able to find even when we all searched the place?”

I thought that maybe Baekho had a way of finding this guy since the very beginning that he had just been hiding.

“Oh, that?” Baekho shrugged without a care, and the truth he revealed was even more shocking. “I drew in his aggro a ton on purpose. Acting like I was suddenly losing it and whatnot.”

“That…was all an act?”

“Yep. I got the feeling that he would come near me to observe me if I acted out of sorts. That’s why I went away by myself. I was talking to myself and slamming my head into the walls, and when I thought I drew enough attention… Boom!” Baekho mimicked an explosion with his hands. “I fired a ton of AOE effects around me. And someone ended up getting hit. The rest is what you saw, Baron.”

“Uh… I see…”

“How’s that? How was my plan? Wasn’t it genius?”

Well, I wasn’t sure if I could call it genius. One thing I was sure of was that this guy’s mental state wasn’t normal.

He’s actually just reckless…

As I stood there speechless, Baekho smirked before turning around. “Anyway, since I got some of my anger out…let’s dig ‘em up.”

He walked over to the unconscious Bryat before going through Bryat’s pockets.

“Damn it, looks like he’s put all his important things in his sub-space.”

“I don’t see his bow either. Isn’t it a numbered item? A pretty high number at that.”

“Hah, in the end, I can’t even loot him unless he cooperates… Hey, gramps! You got anything?”

“I will try.” Fallen Gramps approached him before crouching down a little. He then shook his head. “As the spell is quite complicated, it is impossible for me to open his sub-space without causing damage or unlocking his imprint.”

“Then there’s no way?”

“It’s possible to forcibly open the sub-space by destroying the spell, but there will be losses.”

“What do you mean by that specifically?”

“A third of the objects within the sub-space will be destroyed within the other dimension.”

“Ah, to put it simply, there is a 30 percent chance this guy’s bow could disappear?”

“What will you do?”

“Do it. I don’t think this guy will open it for us willingly anyway.”

“Then we’ll need to move to a more open area.”

With Fallen Gramps’s suggestion, we moved Bryat into the main hall and laid him there.

“I will begin.”

He began to unseal the sub-space.

Vwoong!

At first, all that happened was that the imprint on the back of his hand glowed red, but white light began to flow from it at some point.

Flash!

Then, bright white light shone out as a small portal opened on the back of his hand. With an explosive boom, all sorts of items that seemed to have been inside his sub-space exploded into the surroundings.

“Whoa…”

He was like a treasure goblin or something.

Just how big was this Bryat guy’s sub-space?

“This is with a third of the items destroyed…?”

Everyone was in awe at the amount of items that had been expelled from the sub-space. Just at a glance, more than half of the main hall was covered in his items.

“B-be careful!”

And since they were just thrown about, the room turned into a mess.

Shatter!

Broken potions, pots…

Boom!

There were some explosives as well that just exploded when they made contact with the outside.

Fwoosh!

We even had to take some time to neutralize poisons since poisonous dust was puffed into the air.

Well, the rewards were decent as well.

“Yeah, I believed in you!”

No. 696, Imperial Bow of Raindres, survived the 30 percent destruction and landed outside. Not just that, there were countless other high-quality equipment I could see. He was active as one of the highest-ranking plunderers, so the amount of equipment he had stashed was stacked.

Since he stayed outside the city walls for a long time, looks like he wasn’t able to pawn them off in time.

It was also simply a trait of Noarkan plunderers to hold onto expensive equipment. Noark engaged in bartering quite often. Rather than sell it to a merchant for nothing, it was more worthwhile trading an item for something of equal value.

“Don’t pocket anything and gather them up in one place! I’ll distribute them accordingly later.”

We all worked together to gather the items in one place, and there were quite a few suspicious items in the mix.

“What’s with these wolf masks?”

“Why did Mr. Bryat carry so many of the same mask?”

“They aren’t the same. Look at this one and this one. Their sizes are completely different.”

Oddly enough, there were a lot of wolf masks in his stash. There were also weird medals that were similar to each other.

“There’s a wolf on this medal as well.”

“This doesn’t seem to be a coincidence. I doubt we can say it was something he just picked up during his plundering.”

“Can you give it to me for a second?” Fallen Gramps took the medal and looked over it a little before he scrunched his nose.

“Is it something you recognize?”

“I remember hearing about a medal like this in the past.”

“What is it? I don’t think it’s a magic tool with a specific functionality.”

“This isn’t a magic tool. It is a sort of identification to say that you are a member of a certain organization.”

“An organization…? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an organization that uses a mark like this.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. It is an ancient organization that existed when Rafdonia was being built.”

“An ancient organization? Could I ask what its name is?” GM asked that, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

Fallen Gramps stared down at the medal as he answered. “Heerkmuta.”

“Translating from the ancient language, it means ‘White Wolf.’”

“My knowledge extends to the fact that their name is taken from the nickname of a being they follow.”

“By nickname…”

“Wizard of White.”

As Fallen Gramps said those words, GM’s eyes went wide.

It was understandable. There was only one person who was called the Wizard of White in the history of Rafdonia.

“By Wizard of White…”

“The Last Great Sage, Diplan Groundel Gabrielius. Heerkmuta is an organization created by his followers.”
