Chapter 699: Evil Party (4)

It was a completely impulsive thought.

After all, the record only had specified “three allies” in its writing.

If I make these people my allies and hang around them every day…then I could fulfill that fate by having three of them die instead, right?

However nonsensical it seemed at first glance, I couldn’t find any logical faults in the idea either. The only question left was if this would even work.

But so what? I should do as much as I could.

“Allies…?”

However, it seemed that everyone was caught off guard by my suggestion, as they all just stared at me with wide eyes.

Ah, Baekho’s shocked expression was the best.

“Wow, I’m getting even more curious now. What’d you hear from the old man that’d make you say that?”

After letting his jaw drop for a moment, Baekho quickly regained the sharp glean in his eyes as he looked directly at me.

The reaction gave me pause. I did think that maybe I was being too hasty. Even though the lives of my allies were on the line, I should have remained calm and proceeded with this plan step by step.

“Baron, what did you do with the old man?”

I thought carefully about how to respond. “It was nothing special.”

“Nah, who’d believe that? Nothing happened, but you’ve had a complete change of heart?”

“It just occurred to me that we’ve been traveling together for a while now. You lot would be reliable if we go into the labyrinth together.”

Of course, that was a complete fabrication. The labyrinth was a place where I needed to be careful about being stabbed in the back, more than probably anywhere else, so how could I go in there with these people?

Even without me, they were the type who aimed hidden blades at each other for their own gain. If I joined them as well, it would be pandemonium.

“Hmm… But if you go around with us, what about your clan?” Baekho asked, testing the waters. I could tell that he didn’t believe my explanation one bit, but he still wanted to hear me out first.

“Well, I’ll need to think about that going forward. And it’s not like you all accepted my offer, anyway.”

I tried to smooth over the situation as naturally as possible since I hadn’t thought too deeply about it myself either.

“Wow! The great Giant, Baron Yandel, will be our ally? We might just need to consider this pretty seriously too!” Baekho muttered monotonously as if reading out of a book. Everyone could tell that he was being sarcastic, except one person.

“Um… Baekho…? If Baron joins our team, then m-my position becomes a little unstable…?”

The tank of Team Baekho, Lek Aures. It seemed he was still an adventurer with an instinct to save his job. If only he could pick up on the small stuff as well.

“Aures… Please, just stay quiet…”

“H-how could I be quiet? M-my position is being threatened—!”

When Jaina’s attempt to quietly stop him failed, Baekho let out a frustrated shout.

“No, that’s literally not what’s happening here! Just shut up! Do you want to get kicked out?”

Aures went quiet.

“Man, you’re pissing me off.”

Baekho’s lid popped from Aures not understanding the situation. He then let out a sigh and spoke in a tone that was a far cry from that sarcastic monotone.

“Hey, Baron.”

“I’m listening.”

“Do you know what adventurers are the best at?” When I sent him a look to ask what he was talking about, Baekho stared back at me as he answered, “It’s recognizing things. Recognizing if I have the advantage or not. If the other side is stronger, or if I’m stronger.”

Ba-dump!

My heart jumped into a foreboding rhythm even though I didn’t hear the entirety of his speech. As always, that ominous sensation never missed.

“You can only do it properly after knowing that.”

“What?”

“What do you mean, what? I know you know.”

Baekho signaled with his eyes. Then, Fallen Gramps, Lek Aures, and Jaina went and stood by his side. He called out GM as well.

“Hey, how long are you going to stand there? If you don’t move, you’ll end up dying from a stray hit.”

Sensing the intense murderous aura dripping from Baekho’s words, GM flinched as his eyes darted between me and Baekho.

I could tell that he felt caught in a serious bind due to how quickly the situation was progressing.

As expected of a “human,” it didn’t take long for him to make his decision.

A tank and a wizard. With just those two, it would be close to impossible to face off against those four.

“I-I’m sorry…”

Still, it seemed that GM felt guilty, as he even apologized before quickly walking over to Baekho’s side. I didn’t feel betrayed or anything like that since we weren’t allies, to begin with.

Rather than ask what they were doing, I just raised my shield and got into my combat stance.

“Don’t get too upset. To be honest, I’m probably the one who’s more upset here,” Baekho said. “I mean, isn’t it pretty obvious that you talked about something with that old man before coming out? So even if I have to ignore everything else, I’ll need to at least hear what that was about… Even if I need to use the adventurers’ method.”

Just what was this guy’s idea of an adventurer?

Still, a part of me just accepted his viewpoint. Without power, one had no choice but to wallow in their own weakness. This was as natural of a law to this world as paying money to buy commodities was.

Baekho took a step toward me as if he were going to charge me at any moment. However, I didn’t mirror him and take steps back.

I mean, it was obvious at this point.

Escaping is impossible.

There was nowhere to run to in this situation. Even if I did run, with my slow body, I would just get caught in the end.

“Heh? You’re not taking even a step back?” Baekho mumbled as if surprised.

However, from my perspective, this was nothing to be surprised by. Shields were a tool created to block attacks flying in from the front, not the back, after all.

“Are you thinking that I won’t be able to kill you?”

Well, it was true that I did think about that. Baekho was hoping that I would open the Gate of the Abyss so he couldn’t ever kill me.

“But so what? Even if I can’t kill you, I can think of a few dozen ways of fucking you up.”

That didn’t mean I would underestimate or ignore him.

As he just said, there were countless ways for him to torture me and inflict suffering on me without killing me. That interrogation he did against Bryat wouldn’t even be necessary.

“For example, I can steal all the equipment you’re wearing right now. Or maybe we castrate you so that you’ll never be distracted by a woman ever again.”

Ah, uh… Hmm. Castration was unexpected.

Damn it, do I have to just tell him the truth?

“If not that, we can threaten to return and kill all of your allies—”

No, never.

“Behel—LAAAAA!” I let out a roar and recentered my weakening heart. “The hell are you going on about?”

Baekho was a mongrel. A dog that would cleanly eat up his opponent if they looked weak.

“Shut up, and come at me.”

I would face him head-on.

Baekho also seemed to recognize that if he just kept talking, he would just sound like a dog with all bark and no bite. He clenched his mouth shut, and the resulting silence echoed out into our surroundings.

A standoff was born through that silence. Baekho seemed to have used the time to finally finish collecting his thoughts.

“I thought you might be responding so strongly because you trust in some backing… but whatever. We’ll know when we get there. Let’s get those clothes off the baron first. After that, we can think about castrating him or other things.”

After saying that, Baekho’s form disappeared from my sight. He was so fast that it was nigh impossible for me to track him with my Agility. However, my warrior instincts, which had already gotten me through countless battles, reacted to his attack and pushed out my shield toward him.

“Did you think that’d work in PvP?”

I’d shoved the shield into the path of his punch, yet there was no impact.

“I know that it only blocks damage—”

I then felt a blow to a completely different area: the back of my head.

“—if I hit the shield.”

Boom!

It felt like I got hit by a siege cannon.

Without an opportunity to even let out a groan, my enlarged body fell forward.

…Huh?

By the time I registered it, another shock had reverberated across my jaw as my body was flung backward again.

What was that? An uppercut?

I couldn’t tell how he was able to land that at that angle, but one thing was clear. I had taken a pretty big hit at that time, enough to make me want to throw up my innards.

“Urgh…”

“It’s amazing, right? If you get hit like that, it feels like you’ve taken double the damage you actually take. Ah, just so you know, this is an additional effect that wasn’t in the game… Rah!”

I shook myself out of it as best as I could and swung the Demon Grinder, but Baekho annoyingly jumped out of the way.

“Ah, looks like it’s done.”

Suddenly, Baekho put some distance between us.

“It’s nothing personal.”

It was then I realized my surroundings had turned red.

I looked up in a daze to see a huge sphere reminiscent of the sun falling onto me.

Fwoosh!

It was surrounded by a layer of mana that looked like ominous black flames. And unfortunately for me, the sphere was larger than my shield, even though I was using Giantization.

Tens of times larger.

It’s impossible to perfectly guard against it.

After quickly coming to that conclusion, I raised my shield to the sky and entered dragon mode.

[You have cast Scales of Greed. Your Mana Resistance is above 500. All magic damage taken will be decreased by 50%.]

The active skill of Bellarios that took on the role of Mana Resistance in the Invincible Barbarian (Final Build).

Just as I cast that skill…

Flash!

Intensely bright light that burned up even the sound in the air enveloped my entire body.

Sizzle!

Steam began to leak from underneath the scales covering my body as if I had been dumped into a huge pot that just finished boiling water. It was hot, painful, and irritating.

“Wow, he’s completely fine even after getting hit by that.”

It definitely wasn’t a fatal wound. I was able to defend all the important parts of my body using the shield.

“Looks like the baron’s become a pretty terrifying monster.”

He only stood there in amazement for a moment. Baekho immediately narrowed the distance between us again as he buzzed around me and attacked.

Boom! Boom!

He flung multiple hard-hitting jabs against me.

Boom!

And mixed in a few heavy blows in between them as well.

Shine!

Fallen Gramps’s curse magic and Jaina’s multitudes of debuffs surrounded my body.

Vwoong!

And Fallen Gramps’s spells that I couldn’t block with my shield struck me periodically.

However…

Smack!

It was at this point that Baekho was the one who tilted his head after having used me as a punching bag this whole time.

“What the? Your head doesn’t even get pushed anymore.”

That was because the shield barbarian became more sturdy the more I got hit.

[Physical Resistance stats will increase proportionally to magic damage absorbed.]

How many spells have I gotten hit by at this point?

[Your Physical Resistance is over 750. All physical damage received is decreased by half.]

My Evolving Shell had reached stage three already…

[You have cast Iron Fortress. Evolving Shell’s effect has increased by 1.5X.]

I even used Iron Fortress.

Smack!

Compared to before, the strikes were as weak as tickles.

Even though I was disadvantaged in this 1v4, I was able to stand proud and face them.

He won’t be able to use his ultimate move here.

Neither Stellar Extinction nor that “something” he used in the Golden Ruins to catch Bryat would be viable since his allies were nearby.

Well, that also meant he was free to use it as much as he wanted as soon as his allies were out of his line of fire.

“I won’t have to worry much if this is all. Baron, do you seriously want to do this? Hey! All of you, step back!”

In a sense, I was now in a similar position to what Baekho must have been in when he began fighting me while knowing the characteristics of my shield.

Don’t treat me like some moron monster.

I also knew everything he was up to, and I wasn’t going to just let the other party members step away from him.

“Behel—LAAAAA!”

I let out my battle cry and charged toward the backline that was trying to withdraw.

“Aures!”

I mean, I’d spent the entire day getting beaten up. It was time for me to dish some damage out as well, right?

Dash!

As I began my charge, Aures, who had been on standby at the back, stepped forward while raising his shield.

It was a tank versus a tank. Usually, it would just lead to a long drawn-out fight where neither side could land any serious blows against the other…

“Don’t worry! I will protect Sir Ruingenes—”

The hell are you talking about? Do you think I’m a pure tank like you?

No. 87, Kraul’s Demon Grinder.

No. 687, Siege Slaughterer.

And the Ogre’s Swing as well.

Honestly, these things were just basic attacks for me at this point. I had obtained quite the killing move not long ago.

[You have used the Dragon Plate of Aegis.]

I had stacked up quite a lot of damage from Baekho’s jabs and Fallen Gramps’s spells.

[The accumulated damage is reflected.]

Yeah, this was enough.
